Introduction

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also called sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or venereal diseases, are contagious infections caused by pathogens (bacteria, virus, parasite) and are characterized by transmission from person to person through sexual activity and intimate contact.

Infection with herpes simplex virus (HSV), known as herpes, is common globally. It is a STD caused by two types of viruses – herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). An estimated 3.7 billion people under age 50 (67%) have HSV-1 infection globally. Genital herpes caused by HSV-2 affects an estimated 491 million (13%) people aged 15–49 years worldwide.

Genital herpes is mostly asymptomatic or unrecognized but can cause painful blisters or ulcers at the site of infection, ranging from mild to severe. Infection is lifelong, and symptoms can recur over many years. HSV-2 infection increases the risk of acquiring HIV infection by approximately three-fold.

The BioPerfectus Herpes Simplex Virus Real Time PCR Kit adopts real-time fluorescent PCR technology intended for the in-vitro qualitative detection of herpes simplex virus DNA, which is obtained from human male urethral swabs and female cervical swabs specimens.
